I. spatella Davis in Notes R.B.G. Edinb., 26: 24, t. 6 (1964). Figure 16, p. 293. Strongly perennial with subterranean caudices, glabrous. Stems 45-60 cm,
slender, laxly panicled above, purplish. Leaves thin; basal leaves obovate, obscurely repand-dentate, or sublyrate, blades only 1.5-3 cm; median stem leaves oblong, acutely auricled. Flowers unknown. Fruits minute, obovate, 5-6 x 2 mm, glabrous, shortly attenuate below, loculus submedian, surrounded by a narrow, thin, membranous wing broadening out above into an obovate concave wing, midrib slender. Ft. 6.
Type: Turkey B9 Van: Artos Da. above Gevaş, 2250 m, among rocks in limestone gorge, 14 vii 1954, Davis & Polunin (D. 22683, holo. E! iso. K!).
Endemic to Kurdistan and only known from the type gathering. Differs from I. cochlearis in its strongly perennial habit (with numerous sterile rosettes), different leaf shape and much smaller fruits with a membranous-winged loculus.
Ir.-Tur. element. A specimen from Hakkari (Cilo Da., 3100 m, D. 24080) comes nearest to I. spatella but is a larger plant with puberulent fruits twice the size. Its taxonomic position is uncertain. Sect. Apterolobus Boiss. Fruits slender, much longer than broad, the terete, fungose loculus bearing only a terminal membranous wing. Biennial or annual.
